"The Response" in Virginia

An early screening of "The Response" took place in Charlottesville as part of the Virginia Film Festival. The panel at the screening was moderated by journalist Dahlia Lithwick, and included two lawyers, David Dickman and Agnieszka Fryszman, who have represented Guantanamo detainees, as well as writer/producer/actor Sig Libowitz and actor Peter Riegert.

Dahlia Lithwick is a journalist specializing in legal affairs. She is is a contributing editor at Newsweek and senior editor at Slate, and her work has appeared in The New Republic, ELLE, The Ottawa Citizen, and The Washington Post. In connection with the UVA screening of "The Response," Dahlia Lithwick said "This movie has achieved in 30 minutes what I have attempted to achieve over the last seven years."

Dahlia Lithwick is also a member of the ABA's Law Day advisory group. In connection with Law Day 2010, Dahlia Lithwick said, "We need to stop thinking of the rule of law as a constraint on America and restore it to the very purpose of the whole experiment." (See the full description of Law Day 2010.) The theme for Law Day 2011 was "The Legacy of John Adams: From Boston to Guantanamo." A screening and discussion of "The Response" formed the centerpiece of the state of Nevada's Law Day 2011 activities.

Agnieszka Fryszman is a partner at Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll; she has represented four men who have been detained by the United States at Guantanamo Bay. She is one of the attorneys whose experience is covered in "The Guantanamo Lawyers: Inside a Prison Outside the Law" edited by Mark P. Denbeaux and Jonathan Hafetz.

As described above, one of the earliest screenings of "The Response" was in Charlottesville as part of the Virginia Film Festival.

More recently, "The Response" was screened at the Judge Advocate General's Legal Center and School/U.S. Army in Charlottesville on February 24, 2011.


"The Response" was screened for an audience at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg on February 20, 2011.
